I need to supervene upon the pinion seal on my 2001 Dakota, and I was just thinking, is there a torque value for the pinion nut? viii ane/4 rear end.
Whatever the amount, I should be able to get it. Got a twenty-150ft/lb wrench and another that goes to 700 ft lbs.

Never did a Dakota But I take done a lot of these over the years. this nut is very very tight as you lot will detect when yous attempt to remove it. My way was to set up the emergency brake TIGHT and use a braker bar with a 3 ft. pipe on it. To attest the presure required to losen this pinion nut I still accept this QUALITY braker and information technology is aptitude. I accept had a few that needed a cold chesel and hammer to split up the nut to break it free. Always reinstall with a NEW QUALITY lock washer. I accept never had a torque wrench big enough to measure out this presure merely I did reinstall the nut using the pipe and as much presure as I could muster. Non the proper mode to do this job but it works and I never had a failure in forty plus years in my store.

"Lockwasher"? Never seen one of those on a Pinion nut LOL! I assume y'all meant locking nut.
Be careful when you read a manual. When you are torqing to Beat the cruch sleeve, information technology takes a barrel load of torque.
If you lot are just advisedly replacing the seal, y'all don't need every bit much torque. Enough to keep things tight and together, only not enough to further beat the beat sleeve.
Using a 3 foot breaker bar and the wheels locked. You lot could probably tighten the nut hard plenty to get it tight without beingness able to shell the crush sleeve.
I haven't been able to crush a beat sleeve with a billow bar. I've had to use a hi torque impact to do that.

Replace washer was a poor expression. most do take a lock nut and I ALWAYS replace information technology. Some older ones did take a lock washer of a type(non tipical). I don't think they have been used in many years. Don't forget, I'1000 going dorsum more and so 40 years in my store and a lot farther then that in years old the autos were. 250 lbs of torque sounds well-nigh right. Eat your wheaties before you tackle that nut lol.
So many bug .... So niggling time

OBIO3, I KNEW you lot had to have meant lockwasher :p
If the book says 210 or whatever, then that has to be simply when replacing the seal. Because 210, 250, etc is NOT going to crush the sleeve. That is for certain!

LOL! Funny thing is I just learned alot about this only terminal year when I swapped my gears. I had farted around with swapping in junk yard gear sets in the past on hobbie / lawn built hot rods but being close was good plenty on those. But on my Dak I needed it to TOW and exist reliable. Some guy taught me alot online and I did my front and rear gears with NEW parts last fall.
Rear ends are one part of a vehicle not every "Mechanic" will mess with. :p
I'yard non afraid to try something. You can ever learn by breaking something if you take to. Luckily that wasn't the case with my diffs. But I did learn almost needing a higher torque touch on gun than the 1 I had been using for years when it came to them pinion nuts crushing the sleeves.

210ft lbs for that nut! That info is really appreciated!
I guess I'll have to get out that Proto Torque wrench that I mentioned. I bought it for old JD diesel tractors. Didn't think I'd apply it on my truck!

Hey Brandon, did one on my 94 this spring. It would be much easier with lift. I did mine on drive upwardly ramps. If your brakes don't concord you
the ground. You may have to push with your leg.
With the wheels up an freely spinning turn the pinion nut to meet how much torque is needed to plough the wheels. Save that number for after installation. Subsequently final tightening recheck the wheels for free spinning. If you lot over torque it you could cause the bearings to wear prematurly.
